David Treuer Biography

David Treuer is an Ojibwe Indian from the Leech Lake Reservation in northern Minnesota, and he is a best-selling novelist. He has won a Pushcart Prize, two Minnesota Book Awards, and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Bush Foundation, and the Guggenheim Foundation. His book, The Heartbeat of Wounded Knee, was a National Book Award and Carnegie Medal nominee in 2019. He splits his time between his home on the Leech Lake Reservation and his job as an English professor at the University of Southern California. David Treuer grew up on the Leech Lake Reservation, the son of Robert Treuer, an Austrian Jew and Holocaust survivor, and Margaret Seelye Treuer, a tribal court judge. He went to Princeton University after graduating from high school, where he completed two senior theses—one in anthropology and the other in creative writing—and collaborated with Toni Morrison, Paul Muldoon, and Joanna Scott. Treuer earned his bachelor's degree in 1992 and went on to publish his debut novel, Little, in 1995. In 1999, he obtained his Ph.D. in anthropology and released The Hiawatha, his second book. In 2006, he published his third novel, The Translation of Dr. Apelles, as well as a book of critique, Native American Fiction; A User's Manual. The Washington Post, Time Out, and City Pages awarded Dr. Apelles' Translation a Best Book of the Year. Rez Life, his first big nonfiction book, was published in 2012. Prudence, his next novel, was released in 2015 by Riverhead Books. Granta, Harper's, Esquire, TriQuarterly, The Washington Post, Lucky Peach, The New York Times, The LA Times, Orion, and Slate.com have published his articles and tales.
