David F. Swensen Biography

David F. Swensen is a philanthropist, endowment fund manager, and investor from the United States. Since 1985, he has served as Yale University's chief investment officer. Swensen is in charge of managing and investing Yale's endowment assets and investment funds, which as of September 2016 totaled $25.4 billion. With Dean Takahashi, he developed The Yale Model, a current portfolio theory application known in the investment industry as the Endowment Model. The Swensen Approach, as his investment theory is known, emphasizes capital allocation in Treasury inflation-protected securities, government bonds, real estate funds, emerging market stocks, domestic stocks, and developing world international equities. Wall Street portfolio managers and other institutions have taken notice of his investing performance with the Yale Endowment. Harvard, MIT, Princeton, Wesleyan, and the University of Pennsylvania have all followed his allocation techniques with varying degrees of success. From 1999 through 2009, the Yale Endowment returned an average of 11.8 percent each year under Swensen's leadership. According to Institutional Investor, Yale's endowment increased by 3.4 percent in the 2016 fiscal year, the largest of any Ivy League institution. Swensen was ranked third on aiCIO's 2012 list of the world's 100 most powerful institutional investors. He was inducted into the Hedge Fund Manager Hall of Fame by Institutional Investors Alpha in 2008.
