About David Deptula
David Deptula Biography
Lt. Gen. David A. Deptula is the first Deputy Chief of Staff for Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance at the US Air Force Headquarters in Washington, D.C. For policy development, planning, assessment, oversight, and leadership of Air Force intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities, he reports to the Secretary of the Air Force and the Chief of Staff of the Air Force. He reports directly to the Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence as the Air Force's Senior Official of the Intelligence Community. General Deptula graduated with honors from the University of Virginia's ROTC program in 1974 and went on to earn a master's degree in 1976. He earned his wings in 1977 and has logged over 3,000 hours of flight time (400 of which were in combat), as well as several operational fighter command assignments. At the unit, major command, service headquarters, and combatant command levels, he has participated in operations, planning, and joint warfighting. He has served on the Commission on Roles and Missions of the Armed Forces and the National Defense Panel, both of which are responsible for defining America's future defense posture. He was formerly the Commander of the General George C. Kenney Warfighting Headquarters and the Vice Commander of the Pacific Air Forces. General Deptula has extensive combat and leadership experience in a number of large combined contingency operations. In 1991, he was the primary assault planner for the coalition air operation known as Desert Storm. He was a Joint Task Force Commander twice, first for Operation Northern Watch in 1998/1999, during which he flew 82 combat flights, and once for Operation Deep Freeze, which supported soldiers in Antarctica. The general was the Director of the Combined Air Operations Center for Operation Enduring Freedom in 2001 when he oversaw air operations over Afghanistan during a critical phase of the battle. He served as the Joint Force Air Component Commander for Operation Unified Assistance, the South Asia tsunami relief operation, in 2005, and as the Pacific Command's Standing Joint Force Air Component Commander in 2006.
