David Chao Biography

David Chao is cofounder and general partner at DCM which invests across the U.S. China and Japan. He invested in online lending startup SoFi (currently valued at $1.3 billion) which is hoping for a spring 2015 IPO that would raise the company's valuation to $3.5 billion. Chao invested early in Chinese social network Renren (IPO 2011) and in SlingMedia acquired in 2007 for $380 million by Dish/EchoStar. Chao also was involved in flash storage processor company SandForce acquired in 2011 by LSI for $370 million. Recent string of exits: PGP Corp. Starflyer HireRight. Chao recently joined the boards of YikYak uCloud Chosen and Slice. He is chairman at 51job and also sits on the board at Renren Bittorrent SoFi 99Bill and others. Prior to DCM Chao was co-founder acting CFO and CTO at Japan Communications. He previously worked at McKinsey Apple and Recruit and is on the advisory board of Legend Capital. Chao is passionate about audio equipment and cars.
