David Baltimore Biography

David Baltimore is the Robert Andrews Millikan professor of biology at the California Institute of Technology and the 1975 Nobel laureate in physiology or medicine. He is regarded as one of the world's most prominent biologists, having worked as a researcher, educator, administrator, and champion for science and engineering. His work on viral replication, which led to a better knowledge of the life cycle of retroviruses, has had a significant impact on national science policy on topics like recombinant DNA research and the AIDS pandemic. Baltimore has received several awards, including the National Medal of Science in 1999 and the Warren Alpert Foundation Prize in 2000. He is the head of the Joint Center for Translational Medicine, a Caltech-UCLA cooperation in which fundamental scientific discoveries are translated into clinical reality. Baltimore is the American Association for the Advancement of Science's former president and current chair. Swarthmore College awarded him a B.A. in chemistry in 1960, and Rockefeller University awarded him a Ph.D. in 1964.
