David Alan Harvey was born in San Francisco and reared in Virginia. At the age of 11, he became interested in photography. In 1956, Harvey used the money saved from his newspaper route to buy a secondhand Leica and began shooting his family and neighborhood.
He lived with and chronicled the life of a black family in Norfolk, Virginia, when he was 20 years old, and the result was the book Tell It Like It Is, which was released in 1966. In 1978, the National Press Photographers Association honored him Magazine Photographer of the Year.
