David Alan Harvey Biography

David Alan Harvey was born in San Francisco and reared in Virginia. At the age of 11, he became interested in photography. In 1956, Harvey used the money saved from his newspaper route to buy a secondhand Leica and began shooting his family and neighborhood. He lived with and chronicled the life of a black family in Norfolk, Virginia, when he was 20 years old, and the result was the book Tell It Like It Is, which was released in 1966. In 1978, the National Press Photographers Association honored him Magazine Photographer of the Year. Harvey went on to film more than forty National Geographic magazine articles. He's worked on projects about French teens, the Berlin Wall, Maya culture, Vietnam, Native Americans, Mexico, and Naples, as well as a recent piece on Nairobi. His two major works, Cuba and Divided Soul, are based on his vast research on the Spanish cultural movement into the Americas, while his book Living Proof (2007) is about hip-hop culture. The Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Nikon Gallery, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts have all shown his work. Workshops and seminars play a significant role in his life. Harvey is the creator and editor of the award-winning Burn magazine, which publishes both print and online editions of renowned and rising photographers. Burn released his most recent novel (based on a genuine incident) in 2012. Harvey became a full member of Magnum in 1997 after joining as a nominee in 1993. He splits his time between New York City and the North Carolina Outer Banks.
