Danny Wuerffel Biography

Danny Wuerffel is a philanthropist and retired football player. He was the recipient of the prestigious Heisman Trophy in 1996 when he played for the University of Florida.
Wuerffel is the son of an Air Force chaplain and grew up in the Destin area. At Fort Walton Beach High School he won the Florida state football championship. While in college Wuerffel played quarterback for the Florida Gators under Steve Spurrier. His teams won 4 consecutive Southeastern Conference (SEC) titles between 1993 and 1996. Wuerffel led the Gators to the 1996 National Championship and won handily 52-20 over their archrival Florida State University at the 1997 Nokia Sugar Bowl in New Orleans Louisiana.
Danny Wuerffel broke almost every quarterback record at the University of Florida and many in the NCAA during his career. In 1996 he became the first athlete in the collegiate ranks to win the Heisman and Draddy (NCAA student-athlete of the year) trophies in a single season. He won several awards including the William V. Campbell Award given to the nation’s top scholar-athlete. Danny graduated with high honors earning a bachelor’s degree in Public Relations.
