Daniel Diermeier Biography

Daniel Diermeier is the dean of the University of Chicago's Harris School of Public Policy and Emmett Dedmon Professor of Public Administration. Formal political theory, political institutions, the interplay of business and politics, text analytics, public perception, and crisis and reputation management are among his teaching and research interests. He has two books and over 80 research publications in academic journals, primarily in political science, economics, and management, but also in linguistics, sociology, and psychology, as well as computer science and applied mathematics. Diermeier is a Guggenheim Fellow, as well as a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Canadian Institute of Advanced Research (CIFAR). His study has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, The Economist, Business Week, The Financial Times, Fortune, and The New York Times, among other publications. Diermeier previously taught at Stanford University's Graduate School of Business and Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management, most recently as IBM Professor of Regulation and Practice in the department of Managerial Economics and Decision Sciences and director of the Ford Motor Company Center of Global Citizenship. He also held positions in the departments of Economics, Political Science, Linguistics, and Law. He received 13 teaching honours during his career at Northwestern, including the Kellogg "Lavengood Professor of the Year Award" in 2001 and the Kellogg "Alumni Professor of the Year Award" in 2013. He was designated one of the “World's 50 Best Business School Professors” in 2007 and received the Aspen Institute's “Faculty Pioneer Award,” dubbed the “Oscar of Business Schools” by The Financial Times. He was the founding academic director of the CEO Perspectives Program, one of the world's premier development programmes for C-level executives, and co-founded the Northwestern Institute on Complex Systems (NICO). He was also the chairman and co-founder of the Northwestern Global Health Foundation, which was awarded the 2012 Chicago "Up-and-Comer" innovation award for its work producing low-cost medical equipment. He is a member of the Chicago Economic Club. Diermeier has worked as a consultant for governments, non-profits, and major corporations like Abbott, Accenture, Allianz, Baxter International, BP, the City of Chicago, the Government of Canada, Edelman, Ernst & Young, Exelon, the FBI, General Mills, Greenpeace, Hyatt, Johnson & Johnson, Kraft, McDonald's, Medtronic, the Metropolitan Opera of New York, Metro Group, PricewaterhouseCoopers, and Shell.
