Dan Widmaier Biography

Dan Widmaier is CEO and co-founder of Bolt Threads a new San Francisco Bay Area-based company harnessing proteins found in nature to create versatile and sustainable high performance fibers. In 2004 as a graduate student at the University of California San Francisco Dan’s research led him to a fascination with spider silk where he set out to recreate the proteins found in natural silk. Five years later Bolt Threads was founded to make spider silk without the spiders – Engineered Silk fibers. Dan has used his passion and expertise to lead the company from lab bench to commercial scale manufacturing; expansion of the company from three to 50+ employees; and securing venture financing totaling $40 million. He earned his doctorate in chemistry and chemical biology from UC San Francisco where his graduate research involved designing genetic circuits to control microbial organelles. Dan lives in the East Bay with his wife a fashion designer and their 16-month-old son.
