Damon Hill Biography

Son of Graham Hill and Former British racing driver, Damon Hill is one of two sons of a former Formula One world champion who won the title. In 1981, he began to race on motorbikes and moved on to single-seater racing cars after short success. He advanced steadily up the ranks to the International Formula 3000 championship in 1989, and he never won a race at that level because of the strong competition. In 1992, Hill became a test driver for the Formula One title-winning Williams team. After Riccardo Patrese's departure, he was elevated to the Williams race team the following year and took the first of his 22 victories at the 1993 Hungarian Grand Prix. Hill was Michael Schumacher's main rival for the Formula One Drivers' Championship during the mid-1990s, and as a result, these two crashed many times on and off the race track. Their collision at the 1994 Australian Grand Prix gave Schumacher his first title by one single point. In 1996, Hill became champion with eight wins, but was dropped by Williams for the following season. He went on to drive for the less competitive Jordan and Arrows teams, and gave Jordan their first win in 1998. After the 1999 season, Hill retired from racing and has since then started several businesses and made appearances playing the guitar with celebrity bands. Succeeding Jackie Stewart, he became president of the British Racing Drivers' Club, in 2006. And in 2011, Hill resigned from the position and Derek Warwick replaced him. He presided over the securing of a 17-year contract for Silverstone to hold Formula One races, which allowed the circuit to see broad renovation work. Hill now works as a member of the Sky Sports F1 broadcasting team.
