About Courtney Barnett
Courtney Barnett Biography
Courtney Barnett is an Australian singer-songwriter and guitarist from Melbourne. Known for her witty, rambling lyrics and deadpan singing style, she attracted attention from the North American and UK music press in October 2013 with the release of her debut full-length recording and well-received performances at the CMJ Music Marathon. At the latter event, Barnett was mentioned by both Rolling Stone and The New York Times as a standout performer.
In 2012 Barnett started her own label, Milk! Records and released her first EP I’ve Got A Friend Called Emily Ferris to glowing reviews around Australia.
Barnett received international critical acclaim in 2013 with her second EP How To Carve A Carrot Into A Rose. Lead single "Avant Gardener" tells the story of having an anaphylactic panic attack in the midst of an Australian heatwave, with lyrics like “The paramedic thinks I’m clever cos I play guitar, I think she’s clever cos she stops people dying.” "Avant Gardener" was named ‘Best New Track’ by Pitchfork Media in 2013.
Barnett combined these two releases into one and called it The Double EP: A Sea of Split Peas, released internationally on 20 May 2013 via House Anxiety/Marathon Artists. It was named the album of the week by Stereogum. The musical style of A Sea of Split Peas varies from the woozy piano-strewn opener "Out of the Woodwork," which showcases a darker side of Barnett's writing, to the romantic and melancholic "Anonymous Club" to "History Eraser," an infectious Dylan-esque track that was recently nominated (alongside Tame Impala) for the APRA Song Of The Year in Australia.
In 2015, Barnett released details on her upcoming full-length album, recorded in April 2014 with Burke Reid, along with two singles, "Pedestrian at Best" and "Depreston" and accompanying music videos. Her debut album, "Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit," was released worldwide on 23 March 2015 and was accompanied by an American tour.
