Cormac McCarthy is a dramatist and writer from the United States. He's authored eight books, as well as plays and screenplays, in the Southern Gothic, western, and post-apocalyptic genres. He earned the Pulitzer Prize for The Road in 2007, and his 2005 novel No Country for Old Men was made into a film of the same name in 2007, which won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture. His earlier novel Blood Meridian (1985) was named to Time Magazine's list of the 100 best English-language books published between 1925 and 2005, and he came in second place for a similar title in a poll of the best American fiction published in the last 25 years conducted by The New York Times in 2006. Along with Thomas Pynchon, Don DeLillo, and Philip Roth, he was designated one of the four important American authors of his period by literary critic Harold Bloom. Modern critics usually connect him to William Faulkner. McCarthy received the PEN/Saul Bellow Honor, a lifetime achievement award from the PEN American Center, in 2009. McCarthy is proficient in Spanish and spent the 1960s in Ibiza, Spain.
