About Christian Fittipaldi
Christian Fittipaldi Biography
In the early 1990s, Christian was a highly regarded young racing driver who competed in 40 Grand Prix for Minardi and Footwork between 1992 and 1994. After winning the Formula 3000 title in 1991, Fittipaldi advanced to Formula One. However, Christian's opportunities to test and impress were limited at Minardi, and despite holding a number of points-scoring positions early in 1993, he lost out with the team management and was sacked with two GPs remaining. In 1994, he had one more go at F1 with the Footwork team, collecting two fourth-place finishes. Fittipaldi, however, became disillusioned with GP racing and traveled to America to race, where he has been ever since. Fittipaldi raced mostly in Champcars and was known for his consistency more than his overall speed. However, by the time he won his first Champcar event at Road America in 1999, he had established himself as a championship candidate owing to his steady finishes. Fittipaldi sustained the first of his two fractured legs while racing Champcars, just as his American career appeared to be taking off. Despite the fact that he was able to return both times and win more races, he was never able to recapture the consistent form that defines Champcar champions. Fittipaldi moved his concentration to NASCAR when his Champcar career was put on hold. In 2001 and 2002, he competed in the Busch Series three times. Despite his lackluster performance in those races, he drew Richard Petty's attention, and he was signed to Petty Enterprises near the end of 2002, making his Winston Cup debut at Phoenix. Christian made his maiden Daytona 500 start in 2003, in a one-race contract with Andy Petree, and later drove for Richard Petty in ARCA. After John Andretti was fired from the 43 vehicles in the summer of 2003, Fittipaldi took over as the driver. Christian struggled early in the season and was reallocated, but he is still with the team, driving the 44 car, and intends to run a full Cup season with Richard in the future. In 2004, Fittipaldi was a co-driver in the winning vehicle at the 24 Hours of Daytona. Fittipaldi finished with a total of 12 points in the Formula One season.
