Christian Cooper is an American science writer, editor, birdwatcher, and activist. A Harvard graduate with a degree in biology, he is best known for his work in science communication and his advocacy for diversity in birdwatching. Cooper authored “Better Living Through Birding: Notes from a Black Man in the Natural World” (2023), a memoir blending his experiences as a Black birder with insights on nature and identity. Cooper hosts the National Geographic series “Extraordinary Birder” (2023), which showcases birdwatching across the U.S. A former Marvel Comics editor, he created the first openly gay character, Yoshi Mishima, in the Star Trek: Starfleet Academy series. Cooper serves on the board of the National Audubon Society and lives in New York City.
