Chicago is a rock band from Chicago, Illinois, established in 1967. In 1968, they were known as the Chicago Transit Authority until reducing its name in 1969. The self-described "rock and roll band with horns" started out creating politically motivated rock songs before transitioning to a gentler sound and a string of hit ballads. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the group enjoyed a consistent string of singles. Since at least 2008, Billboard has ranked Chicago as one of the best American bands of all time in terms of singles chart success, and since 2015, the greatest American band in terms of album chart success. Chicago is one of the most enduring and successful rock bands of all time, with over 100 million albums sold worldwide. Chicago was the first rock band to sell out Carnegie Hall for a week in 1971. Chicago has sold over 40 million records in the United States, with 23 gold, 18 platinum, and 8 multi-platinum albums to their credit. They've had five consecutive number-one albums on the Billboard 200, as well as 20 Billboard Hot 100 top-ten singles. In 2016, they were enshrined in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Original members Peter Cetera, Robert Lamm, and James Pankow were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2017 for their contributions to songwriting while members of the band.
