Catherine McKenna Biography

The Honorable Catherine McKenna was elected as the first female Member of Parliament for Ottawa Centre in 2015 and named Minister of the Environment and Climate Change the following year. She was re-elected as Minister of Infrastructure and Communities in 2019. She has said that she would resign from her position in October 2023. McKenna, as Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, is in charge of implementing the historic Investing in Canada Plan, which aims to boost economic development, promote a low-carbon, green economy, and foster inclusive communities. Her responsibilities include mobilizing private sector financing to develop infrastructure in the public interest, whether via collaboration with the Canada Infrastructure Bank or through addressing the country's long-term infrastructure requirements and objectives. McKenna helped negotiate the Paris Climate Agreement, negotiated Canada's first comprehensive climate plan with a national price on pollution, announced a ban on single-use plastics by 2021, expanded parks and protected areas across the country, and introduced the Impact Assessment Act to better protect the environment and build a stronger economy as the former Minister of Environment and Climate Change. She is working with communities throughout Canada to develop thousands of projects, create employment, and make Canada a cleaner, stronger, and more inclusive country as Minister of Infrastructure and Communities. McKenna has worked as a lawyer in Canada and Indonesia, served as a negotiator for the United Nations in East Timor, taught at the Munk School of Global Affairs, and co-founded the charity organization Level Justice. She is admitted to the Ontario and New York bars and holds degrees from the University of Toronto, the London School of Economics, and McGill Law. Catherine is a long-time Ottawa Centre resident, a mother of three, and an active swimmer and canoeist.
