She began modeling at the age of 18 and has appeared on the covers of Elle (French version, 1996) and other publications. She posed for the Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition and appeared in advertising for Guess jeans (1988), Calvin Klein jeans (biker chick style, 1991), the 1996 Pirelli calendar, and the Sports Illustrated calendar (2000). Otis was also featured in Playboy magazine in 1990 and 2000. She became a celebrity after the publication of Wild Orchid due to claims that she and her then-boyfriend Mickey Rourke shot an unscripted sex scene. In 1992, she married Rourke. In 1998, they divorced. Her film career never took off after Wild Orchid, and her modeling career also stalled as Otis battled her long-term anorexia, drug addiction, and accompanying health difficulties, including cardiac seizures. Her following modest weight increase knocked her out of the supermodel ranks, although Otis has since reclaimed her fame as the ambassador for National Eating Disorders Awareness Week in 2003. She also worked as a correspondent for Channel 4 News in San Francisco on a regular basis. She was a representative for the Breil jewelry brand in 2005. She is a Buddhist and a vegetarian.
