Carol Elizabeth Heiss Jenkins is an American figure skater who was born on January 20, 1940, in New York City. She won the 1960 Olympic gold medal and was a silver medallist in the 1956 Olympics. Heiss was up in Queens' Ozone Park neighborhood, where she began skating at the age of six. Pierre Brunet served as her coach. Heiss initially gained national attention in 1951, when she won the US Novice Ladies' Championship at the age of 11. In 1952, she won the U.S. Junior Ladies championship, and in 1953, she advanced to the senior level. She was second to Tenley Albright in the national championships from 1953 through 1956. Heiss qualified for the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, thanks to her performance 1956. Albright won the gold medal, while she received the silver. Heiss, on the other hand, won the Global Figure Skating Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, West Germany, defeating Albright for the first of her five world crowns. However, Carol's mother, Marie Heiss, was battling illness at the time, and before her death in October 1956, she urged Carol to remain an amateur in order for her to earn a gold medal. Carol Heiss dominated women's figure skating like no one since Sonja Henie between 1957 and 1960. Heiss was the U.S. and World Champion every year, and she won the gold medal at the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley, California, after being ranked first by all nine judges. For the 1960 Olympics, she also took the Olympic Oath. Heiss portrayed the female lead in the 1961 film Snow White and the Three Stooges after retiring from figure skating in 1960. Hayes Alan Jenkins, who won the men's figure skating gold medal at the 1956 Winter Olympics, and his brother David Jenkins, who won the men's figure skating gold medal in 1960, married her. After the Squaw Valley Winter Olympics, Heiss temporarily skated in ice shows before retiring from the sport in 1962. She returned to instruct many skaters in her hometown of Akron, Ohio, in the late 1970s and has since become a well-known figure skating coach. She presently coaches in Lakewood, Ohio. Timothy Goebel, Tonia Kwiatkowski, and Miki Ando are among her students. For her time, Heiss was regarded as a skilled skater. She was the first female skater to land a double axel jump in 1953. A pattern of alternating clockwise and counterclockwise single axels was another of her hallmarks. Heiss, by the way, generally turned her leaps clockwise and her spins counterclockwise; skaters usually do both in the same direction, which is usually counterclockwise. Nancy Heiss and Bruce Heiss, Carol's younger sister and brother, were also professional figure skaters. The three skating Heiss siblings were featured in magazines like Life throughout the 1950s.
