About Carol Guzy

Carol Guzy Biography

Carol Guzy has always aspired to be an artist since she was a child. But, growing up in a working-class household in Bethlehem, Pa., such a goal seemed unattainable. 'Oh, if you're an artist, you'll starve,' says everyone she knows. You must take action that is really realistic.' As a result, Guzy decided to pursue a career as a nurse. She recognized halfway through that she would not, could not, be a nurse. She chuckles as she says, "I was terrified to death that I was going to murder someone by making some dumb mistake." So, as she was pondering her future plans, a friend handed her a camera and she enrolled in a photography school. Her interest in photography led to an internship at the Miami Herald and eventually a career there. She went to The Post in 1988. In the National Press Photographers' annual contest, her photos have won three Pulitzer Prizes and three Photographer of the Year honors. Guzy earned the National Press Photographers Association's prestigious Newspaper Photographer of the Year Award in 1990. She was the first woman to be honored in this way. Guzy has also won four Pulitzer Prizes for his work. She won her first Pulitzer in 1986 for photographs of the destruction caused by the eruption of Colombia's Nevado del Ruiz volcano. Her photographs of the Haitian catastrophe won her the award in 1995. Guzy earned the award in 2000, together with two Washington Post colleagues, Michael Williamson and Lucian Perkins, for their personal portrayal of the situation of Kosovo refugees. Her fourth Pulitzer, for a film that depicted the anguish and despair of Haitians following the devastating earthquake, was awarded this year. Guzy received the same prize as a photographer of the year in 1993 and 1997, in addition to her multiple Pulitzers and her 1990 Photographer of the Year award. Guzy received the National Press Photographers Association's Best of Photojournalism, Enterprise Picture Story, the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award, and the Hillman Prize in Photojournalism in 2009.
