Slim has been ranked by Forbes as the richest person in the world since 2010.

Carlos Slim studied Civil Engineering at the Autonomous University of Mexico, at the same time he was Professor of algebra there.

In 1965, at 25 years of age, he founded several businesses which became the origin of his Group. In 1982, Mexico suffered one of its worst crises due to the foreign debt crisis and the nationalization of the banking system. Finance was paralyzed.

However, Slim became active in those years, acquiring companies at low prices, from sectors such as tobacco, insurance, tires, department stores, tissue paper mills, mining, printing, copper and aluminum conversion.

In 1990 he became involved in telecommunications by acquiring, with South Western Bell, France Telecom and Mexican investors, 20.4% and control of the former state telephone company, Telmex, and its cellular subsidiary Telcel.

Today, these companies are leaders in fixed telephony, mobile and Internet in Latin America, Slim was head of Grupo Inbursa and Grupo Carso since their origin in 1965; of the Carlos Sli Foundation since 1986; Telmex since 1991; and America Movil since 2001.

Telcel´s innovative global prepaid cellular system grew from 35,000 clients at the time of purchase in 1990, to about 170 million cellular subscribers, and today is the fourth largest operator in terms of subscribers in the world.

His companies generate more than 220,000 direct jobs and 500,000 indirect jobs in America. With the premise that poverty-related problems are not solved with charity or social assistance, but with education and employment, Carlos Slim´s main work today is focused on nutrition, health, early education, digital culture, sports and employment across Latin America, through the Carlos Slim and Telmex Foundations, as well as on infrastructure development and employment in Latin America.
