Carlos Llamosa Biography

He is a former Colombian-American soccer player who currently plays as a defender for Major League Soccer's C.D. Chivas USA. Carlos Llamosa began his professional soccer career in 1986 with Colmena, a Colombian team in the third tier. In 1990, he joined Huila of Colombia's top division. Llamosa immigrated to the United States in 1991 to join the rest of his family, who were residing in Queens, New York City at the time. Llamosa resurrected his professional career in 1995, spending a season with the A-New League's York Centaurs. Llamosa was chosen to the All A-League first team in his second season with the club, which was renamed the Fever. Following that, D.C. United selected Llamosa in the 1997 MLS Supplemental Draft, and he quickly won a starting role on the squad, making 20 starts in 25 games played and helping the team win its second consecutive MLS Cup. In 1998, Llamosa remained a constant, starting every game he appeared in. Llamosa became a US citizen on October 23, 1998, and won his first cap against Australia on November 6, barely two weeks after becoming a citizen. Llamosa went on to appear in 29 games for the US, including the 1999 Confederations Cup and the 2002 World Cup Qualifiers. During the 2002 World Cup, he had two substitute appearances. For the 1999 season, Llamosa stayed with D.C., starting every game he played, including the 1999 MLS Cup, when he helped United win their third title. In 2000, Llamosa was a regular for United, starting 20 games and playing 1974 minutes. He was dealt with the Miami Fusion in exchange for Brian Kamler and a first-round draught selection at the end of the 2000 season. With the Fusion, Llamosa continued his strong play, managing the defense of one of the league's best-ever offensive teams while starting 20 games and playing 1827 minutes. The New England Revolution chose Llamosa fifth overall in the 2002 MLS Allocation Draft after the Fusion disbanded at the conclusion of 2001. Over the next two seasons, he would play a key part for the squad, guiding the Revs to an MLS Cup appearance in 2002 and starting 23 games in 2003. Llamosa, on the other hand, missed the whole 2004 season after hurting his ACL during the preseason. In early 2005, he was released. Llamosa returned to the league in 2006, signing with Chivas USA.
