Carliss Y. Baldwin Biography

Carliss Y. Baldwin is the Harvard Business School's William L. White Professor of Business Administration. She is interested in the design process and how it affects company strategy and the structure of business ecosystems. She co-authored Design Rules, Volume 1: The Power of Modularity, the first of two planned volumes, with Kim Clark. Volume 2: Modularity on Trial will look at how modular technologies are altering the global economy's core structure, both positively and negatively. Baldwin graduated from MIT with a bachelor's degree in economics in 1972 and went on to Harvard Business School for his MBA and DBA. She created and taught Mergers & Acquisitions, a second-year MBA subject, and now teaches Finance 2, the first-year requirement. She's served on a number of business and non-profit boards of directors. She has served as a Director of Research, Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Planning, and Director of Doctoral Programs at Harvard Business School. She has served on the Harvard Graduate School of Design's Visiting Committee as well as the policy and admissions committee for the combined Ph.D programme in Science, Technology, and Management.
