Caleb Deschanel Biography

Joseph Caleb Deschanel, A.S.C. is a cinematographer and film/television director from the United States. He has received five Academy Award nominations for Best Cinematography. He is now a member of the Library of Congress's National Film Preservation Board, where he represents the American Society of Cinematographers. A Woman Under the Influence (1974, John Cassavetes), Being There (1979, Hal Ashby), The Black Stallion (1979), The Right Stuff (1983), The Natural (1984), Fly Away Home (1996), The Patriot (2000), Timeline (2003), and The Passion of the Christ are among Deschanel's cinematography credits (2004, Mel Gibson directing). His debut picture, The Escape Artist, was released in 1982, and his second, Crusoe, was released in 1989. Deschanel directed three episodes of David Lynch's Twin Peaks in 1990. He directed an episode of Bones starring his daughter Emily in 2007. In the 2009 film My Sister's Keeper, he served as a cinematographer. He was also the cinematographer for the thriller Dream House, which was released in 2011. Along with George Lucas and Francis Ford Coppola, he was a founding member of the American Zoetrope production team. In 2010, the American Society of Cinematographers presented him with the ASC Lifetime Achievement Award. He has been nominated for five Academy Awards, all of which have been in the category of cinematography. The film The Right Stuff received the first nomination in 1983. His second was for The Natural, which he directed in 1984. In 1996, he won a third Oscar for Fly Away Home, a fourth in 2000 for The Patriot, and a fifth in 2005 for his role in The Passion of the Christ. For his work in The Patriot, he was also honored by the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC).
