About Bruce Babbit
Bruce Babbit Biography
Bruce Babbitt was Secretary of the Interior from 1993 to 2001, Arizona Governor from 1978 to 1987, and Arizona Attorney General from 1975 to 1978. Babbitt, who holds degrees in geology, geophysics, and law, was elected to statewide office as Attorney General in his first election at the age of 36. He went on to serve as Governor for nine years. Governor Babbitt elevated environmental and resource management to the forefront of Arizona policy. He actively negotiated and oversaw the approval of the Arizona Groundwater Management Act of 1980, which remains the nation's most comprehensive water regulation regime. He was also in charge of establishing the Arizona Department of Water Resources and the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality, as well as a significant expansion of the state park system. Babbitt was appointed Secretary of the Interior by President Clinton in 1993 and served for eight years, overseeing the creation of the Pacific Northwest forest plan, restoration of the Florida Everglades, passage of the California Desert Protection Act, and legislation for the National Wildlife Refuge system. Babbitt, a trained firefighter, used his front-line expertise to develop a new federal wild land fire policy that stresses the function of fire in the preservation and repair of natural ecosystems. He pioneered the application of Endangered Species Act habitat conservation strategies and collaborated with President Clinton to establish twenty-two new national monuments, including the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument in Utah. Babbitt is arguably best known to American schoolchildren as the Secretary who reintroduced wolves to Yellowstone. Babbitt is the author of Cities in the Wilderness, which was published by Island Press and puts forth a new vision of land usage in America. As a Blue Moon Fund fellow, he is now working on conservation concerns in the Amazon Basin. Babbitt lives in Washington, D.C., with his wife, Hattie, who is a former Ambassador to the Organization of American States. They have two children, Christopher, who is a lawyer in Washington, DC, and T.J., who is a teacher in the Los Angeles public school system.
