From 2003 to 2005, he worked as an assistant at Marquette University and then at UW-Green Bay from 2005 until 2010. Wardle was hired as the NCAA Division I basketball's youngest head coach. Wardle, who was born in Clarendon Hills, Illinois, played for Marquette from 1997 to 2001, finishing his career as the school's third-leading scorer.
