About Brad Friedel
Brad Friedel Biography
Brad Friedel is a goalkeeper for the United States national team. Between 1992 and 2005, he appeared in 82 games for the United States Men's National Soccer Team, including three FIFA World Cup competitions, making him the third most-capped goalie in the team's history. Fans dubbed him "The Human Wall" after his outstanding performance in the 2002 World Cup. Brad Friedel won the National Collegiate Athletic Association championship in 1990 and was named to the Division I First-Team All-American (soccer) team in 1991 and 1992. He was voted University Player of the Year and received the Herman Trophy in 1992. Brad Friedel dropped out of university to pursue a professional football career, and as a loan player from the United States Soccer Federation, he practiced with Newcastle United F.C. (USSF). Brad Friedel was transferred from USSF to Galatasaray S.K. in Turkey in 1995 after his agent negotiated a 1.1 million dollar agreement. He joined the Columbus Crew of Major League Soccer two years later and was voted Goalkeeper of the Year in the same year. He went on to play for Liverpool Football Club in 1998. Brad Friedel was signed on a free transfer by Graeme Souness to play for Blackburn Rovers in November 2000. One of his most noteworthy Blackburn Rovers performances occurred in the League Cup Final in 2002, when he made a flurry of saves. At the end of the 2002-2003 English football season, Brad Friedel was named to the Premiership Starting XI and was named Blackburn Player of the Year for his 15 clean sheets. Brad Friedel scored a goal from open play in the 90th minute of a game against Charlton Athletic on February 21, 2004, an unusual event for a goalie. Brad Friedel renewed his contract with Blackburn Rovers on April 14, 2006, and stayed with the club until 2008, when he transferred to Aston Villa. Friedel's age of 39 years and 259 days beat the previous record of 39 years and 257 days held by Ernie Callaghan, who last played for Villa against Grimsby Town in April 1947 at the age of 39 years and 257 days. Friedel signed a new deal with Spurs on December 26, 2012, which will keep him at the club until 2014.
