Bob Kersee Biography

Bob Kersee is widely considered one of the best track and field coaches in the world. After two of his athletes won gold at the World Championships in Helsinki, Finland, Kersee was awarded the 2005 USATF Nike Coach of the Year. Kersee's recent top pupils include Allyson Felix, Joanna Hayes, Sheena Johnson, Michelle Perry, and Gail Devers, in addition to his wife Jackie Joyner-Kersee. Other top Kersee-coached athletes who won multiple gold and silver medals in the XXIIIrd Olympiad in Los Angeles and subsequently in Seoul include Valerie Brisco, Greg Foster, and Andre Phillips. Devers was also a standout performer at the Olympics in Atlanta in 1996 and Barcelona in 1992. Devers won gold in the 100m for the second consecutive Olympics in Atlanta (becoming the fourth successive Bruin to do so; Florence Griffith Joyner won in 1988 and Evelyn Ashford in 1984) and also ran the second leg of the triumphant U.S. 4 X 100m relay. In 1993, Kersee finished his tenth season as head coach at UCLA by winning the Pacific-10 Conference and placing third at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. In his last seven seasons, five of his teams have won the conference championship. In addition, eight of his past nine Bruin teams have finished in the top seven in the NCAA, including a runner-up performance in three of the last six seasons and a third-place finish in 1993.
