Bill Adair Biography

Bill Adair is the Knight Professor of the Practice of Journalism and Public Policy and the Director of the DeWitt Wallace Center for Media and Democracy. Adair, one of 25 Knight Chairs at colleges throughout the country, focuses on fact-checking and accountability journalism in her research and teaching. Adair, the founder of the Pulitzer Prize-winning website PolitiFact, has been hailed as a pioneer in fact-checking and digital journalism. He worked as a writer and editor for the Tampa Bay Times (previously the St. Petersburg Times) for 24 years, and he was the paper's Washington Bureau Chief from 2004 to 2013. He founded PolitiFact in 2007 and grew it into the largest fact-checking operation in history, with affiliates in 11 states. He oversaw the site's first foreign expansion, PolitiFact Australia, in 2013. He is a co-founder of the International Fact-Checking Network, a global alliance of fact-checking groups. Adair has spoken about fact-checking and new media at conferences and universities all over the world, including SXSW, TEDx Poynter, Harvard University, Columbia University, University of Texas, Louisiana State University, the College of William & Mary, the US Holocaust Memorial Museum, Beijing Foreign Studies University, Shanghai International Studies University, the University of Sydney, and Netzw. He has been on hundreds of television and radio shows, including the Today Show, Nightline, Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Reliable Sources, C-Washington SPAN's Journal, and the Colbert Report. His honors include the Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting (alongside the PolitiFact crew), the Manship Prize for New Media in Democratic Discourse, and the Everett Dirksen Award for Distinguished Coverage of Congress.
