Bettany was born and raised in West London. Her parents worked in the theatre, and she learned early on the value and pleasure of sharing thoughts and ideas with a larger audience. Bettany earned a scholarship at Oxford University to study Ancient and Modern History, and she continued her post-graduate research while traveling across the Balkans and Asia Minor. Bettany gives talks all over the world. She has spoken at colleges in the United States, Australia, Germany, Turkey, and the Netherlands on topics ranging from Helen of Troy and the roots of feminine 'Sophia' to Islamic time ideas. Her work in lecture halls and seminar rooms is among the most essential and gratifying for her. She does not, however, limit herself to the academic sphere. For Channel 4, she wrote and presented documentaries such as When the Moors Ruled Europe, Helen of Troy, and The Spartans, which were watched by over 50 million people throughout the world. Bettany has been requested to serve on a number of academic and cultural judging panels. Helen of Troy, the first serious and comprehensive book on Helen ever written, was released in 2005 to widespread critical and social acclaim. She is now working on a Socrates biography.
