Dr. Ben Caldecott is the founder and director of the Oxford Sustainable Finance Programme at the Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment at the University of Oxford. He is a Visiting Researcher at The Alan Turing Institute and a Visiting Scholar at Stanford University. He is an Associate Professor and Senior Research Fellow at the University of Oxford. Ben also serves as a Senior Advisor to the UK Green Finance Institute's Chair and CEO. Caldecott is an expert in environmental, energy, and sustainability issues who works at the crossroads of finance, public policy, and academia, having held top positions in each. He is an accomplished media analyst and public speaker who has produced and edited a large number of books linked to sustainability. He also serves on the University of Oxford Socially Responsible Investment Review Committee, The Prince of Wales's Accounting for Sustainability Project, ATLAS Infrastructure Partners Ltd, Impact Lens Ltd, the British Standards Institution, and the Green Alliance, among other boards and advisory panels. He has designed and launched a variety of sustainable financial initiatives. Caldecott co-founded and heads the Worldwide Research Alliance for Sustainable Finance and Investment (GRASFI), a group of global research universities dedicated to fostering rigorous and meaningful academic research on sustainable finance. He founded and directs The Alan Turing Institute's Sustainable Finance Theme, as well as the Spatial Finance Initiative, which aims to mainstream geospatial capabilities provided by space technology and data science into global financial decision-making. He is one of the co-founders of the Commonwealth Climate and Law Initiative (CCLI), which is looking into the legal basis for directors and trustees to examine, manage, and report on climate change-related risk, as well as the scenarios in which they may be held responsible if they don't. He also created and chaired Bright Blue's energy and environmental research program. He is now a member of the Climate-Related Market Risk Subcommittee of the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission. He headed the Workstream on Task Force on Climate-related Disclosures (TCFD) Implementation as a member of the UK Green Finance Taskforce. He was a Vice President at investment bank Climate Change Capital, one of the first leading asset management and advisory firms focused on the net-zero carbon transition, where he ran the firm's research center and advised clients and funds on the development of policy-driven markets, prior to joining the University of Oxford. He previously held positions as Research Director for Environment and Energy at Policy Exchange, Head of Government Advisory at Bloomberg New Energy Finance, Director in the Strategy Directorate of the UK's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Deputy Director in the Strategy Directorate of the UK's Department of Energy and Climate Change, and Advisor to The World Bank. Caldecott graduated from the University of Oxford with a Ph.D. in economic geography. He studied economics at the University of Cambridge and the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London, where he focused on development and China. He has held Visiting Fellowships at the University of Oxford, the University of Sydney, and the University of Melbourne, as well as being an Academic Visitor at the Bank of England and a Visiting Scholar at Peking University. He contributes to the Journal of Sustainable Finance and Investment as an Associate Editor. Caldecott is also a Non-Resident Fellow of the Colorado School of Mines' Payne Institute for Earth Resources, a Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society and the Royal Geographical Society, and a Senior Common Room Member at Oriel College.
