Water protector Autumn Pelter, popularly called a water warrior is an internationally recognized advocate for clean water, a Anishinaabe-kwe and a member of the Wikwemikong First Nation. Peltier attended a ceremony at a reservation when she was 8 years old and spotted a sign warning that the water was toxic, according to the CBC. Peltier says she had never experienced toxic water for she grew up on a freshwater island in Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory in Canada and that memory of the toxic water sign stayed with her for a long time. Peltier is fighting for indigenous water rights and water conservation six years later at age 14. Josephine Mandamin who is her great aunt and indigenous activist who walked the shores of all five Great Lakes to raise awareness for water conservation is her inspiration. Peltier confronted Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at age 12, telling him she was unhappy with his policies on controversial pipeline projects and Trudeau promised he would help protect the water. 87 long-term water advisories in Canada have been lifted since 2015 and 56 water advisories are remaining. During her speech at the UN, Peltier stated saying “Many people don't think water is alive or has a spirit. My people believe this to be true… We believe our water is sacred because we are born of water.” She also spoke about the importance of water access and water conservation explaining the sacred role water plays in her culture.
