Arthur D. Levinson Biography

Member of the Roche Board of Directors, Arthur D. Levinson, has since 1999 been the chairman of Genentech, Inc. and from 1995 to 2009, he also served as chief executive officer of Genentech, Inc. In 1980, Levinson joined Genentech as a research scientist and in 1989, he became vice president, Research Technology; in 1990, he became vice president, Research; in 1992, he was senior vice president, Research; and in 1993, he was the senior vice president, Research and Development. In September 2013, Levinson was named Chief Executive Officer of Calico, a company focused on health, well-being and aging. In addition to Genentech and Roche, Levinson holds other several Board positions. In November 2011, he was appointed Chairman of the Board of Apple. Since 2005, he’s served as a co-lead director of Apple’s board and since 2000, he’s acted as director. He is the director of NGM Biopharmaceuticals, Inc. and the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard as well as the Chairman of the Board of Amyris; and from 2004 to 2009, he was director of Google. At the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, he currently serves on the Board of Scientific Consultants. He also serves on the Advisory Council for the Lewis-Sigler Institute for Integrative Genomics; the Advisory Council for the Princeton University Department of Molecular Biology; and on the Industrial Advisory Board of the California Institute for Quantitative Biomedical Research. On the 11 United States patents, Levinson has been a named inventor. He’s written and co-written over 80 scientific articles. Levinson received the Irvington Institute's 1999 Corporate Leadership Award in Science and was honored with the Corporate Leadership Award from the National Breast Cancer Coalition in the same year. At the 2003 Biotech Meeting of chief executive officers, he was inducted into the Biotech Hall of Fame. Levinson was named one of the Best Managers of the Year in 2004 and 2005 by BusinessWeek, and he was also named America's Best CEO in the biotech category four years in a row (2004-2007) by the Institutional Investor. Levinson was awarded the James Madison Medal for a distinguished career in scientific research and in biotechnology by Princeton University in 2006; and in the same year, Best Practice Institute placed Levinson on their 25 Top CEOs list and Levinson was recognized by Barron’s as one of The World's Most Respected CEOs. The Biotechnology Industry Organization honored Levinson in 2010 with the Biotechnology Heritage Award and the San Francisco Exploratorium awarded him with their Director's Award. For Leadership and Extraordinary Achievements in Cancer Research, he was awarded the Cancer Research Margaret Foti Award In 2011; and he received the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) Double Helix Medal in 2012. Levinson was elected as a Fellow to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences in 2008. The United States Commerce Department's Innovation Advisory Board appointed Levinson in 2011. From Princeton University, Levinson received a doctorate in Biochemical Sciences and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in molecular biology from the University of Washington.
