About Arash Ferdowsi
Arash Ferdowsi Biography
Dropbox was founded in 2007 by Drew Houston and Arash Ferdowsi, both MIT computer science students. The two were quick to go to work. Ferdowsi withdrew out of school his last semester to devote himself entirely to the project, notwithstanding Houston's recent graduation. For three months, the couple worked nonstop in a tiny Cambridge office, waking up at midday every day and working till dawn the following. I believe we began in the same way that most IT firms do. Houston describes it as "just a couple of men in their boxers coding in a dark room." We merely focused on the task at hand. Dropbox had relocated to San Francisco by September. Sequoia Capital, Accel Partners, Y Combinator, and a few private investors contributed a total of $7.2 million to the firm, which Houston describes as a significant milestone for the team. He didn't grasp the startup's potential until an instructional video on how to use Dropbox went viral on Digg. Dropbox was shut down at the moment. Our beta waiting list grew from 5,000 to 75,000 individuals in only a few hours after the video went viral. Houston explains, "We got a lot of coverage and it was apparent that we were working on something that people were interested in." Houston and Ferdowsi now employ 50 people. The firm doesn't advertise much and instead relies on a referral scheme that rewards users with free space in exchange for referring new clients to the site. Dropbox's revenue comes from premium plans, despite the founders' refusal to divulge exact figures. Users may use the service for free up to 2 GB of storage but can upgrade to 50 GB for $9.99 per month or 100 GB for $19.99 per month. Individuals, small enterprises, event organizers, and even major corporations like Red Bull are among the users. With half of its customers residing outside of the United States, the firm has now added four more languages to their service: Spanish, French, German, and Japanese.
