Antony Blinken Biography

Antony John Blinken, an American diplomat and government official, has served as the 71st United States secretary of state since January 26, 2021. He formerly worked as the deputy national security advisor from 2013 to 2015 and deputy secretary of state from 2015 to 2017 during President Barack Obama's administration. Blinken served in senior roles on the National Security Council and the State Department from 1994 to 2001 during the Clinton administration. He was a senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies from 2001 to 2002. While working as the Democratic staff director of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee from 2002 to 2008, he supported the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Blinken advised Joe Biden's 2008 presidential campaign on foreign policy, then assisted the Obama–Biden presidential transition. As deputy assistant to the president and national security advisor to the vice president from 2009 to 2013, he helped develop U.S. policies on Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iran's nuclear program. After departing from government service, Blinken co-founded WestExec Advisors, a consulting firm. He later returned to public service as a foreign policy advisor for Biden's 2020 presidential campaign before becoming Biden's selection for Secretary of State, a role confirmed by the Senate on January 26, 2021.
