Anthony Fernandez Biography

Lisa Fernandez's father is a Cuban immigrant who used to play baseball. He met Lisa's mother, who had come from Puerto Rico, and married her in New York. In the streets, Lisa's mother and brother played stickball, a type of Ghetto baseball played with a broomstick and a rubber ball. Despite the fact that Lisa was a strong student in school, it was only natural for her to develop a passion for baseball with the support of both of her parents. She began playing when she was eight years old, in 1979. She played in a local children's league when she was 12 years old, and when she tried out for the position of pitcher, her coach told her she would never make it because she wasn't the correct size and build. Lisa and her family moved to Lakewood, California, in 1986, and she enrolled in St. Joseph High School. She joined the girl softball team at her high school, and she and her teammates helped the squad win the CIF Championship.
