Ansel Elgort Biography

Ansel Elgort, born in New York City, is an American actor who stars in “Divergent” as Caleb Prior and “The Fault in Our Stars” as Augustus Waters.

Growing up in a household that embraced the arts, his dad is a photographer for Vogue and his mother is an opera director, Elgort always had a knack and love for acting. He began taking acting classes at the age of twelve.

Before focusing on acting full-time Elgort was often featured in Vogue photoshoots with his father as the photographer. Elgort has stated: “My dad would throw me in the picture if they needed an extra. From an early age, I understood the concept that, if you’re not the star, then your job is to not pull attention away from the star.” Though he has posed as a model, he states that he doesn't want to be a model in his future career. “I wanted to be an actor, a singer, or a dancer. My dad told me that if I became a well-known actor, people would want to take my picture for magazines anyway.”

When he was nine, his mother took him to tryout for the School of American Ballet. Ultimately, he wanted to be on Broadway. He appeared in his first Broadway in 2012, called “Regrets” alongside stars such as Alexis Bldel and Curt Bouril.

He starred in his high school production of “Guys and Dolls” and the musical version of “Hairspray” where he starred as Link Larkin. He graduated from Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School in 2012.

It didn't take Elgort long to hit the big-time. His first film role was in 2013's "Carrie" remake. He followed it up with a role in "Divergent" where he met Shailene Woodley who would become his leading lady in the highly anticipated film adaptation of the popular YA book "The Fault in Our Stars."

Aside from as acting career, Elgort has invested his time in making remixes under the name “Ansolo." He plans to release his remixes from a record label and independently.
