From 1980 to 1987, Carson lived in Montreal and taught at McGill University, the University of Michigan, and Princeton University. She received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1998 and a MacArthur Fellowship in 2000. She's also the recipient of a Lannan Literary Award.
