Ann Rubenstein Tisch Biography

Ann Rubenstein Tisch is the founder and president of Student Leadership Network (SLN), which runs The Young Women's Leadership Schools (TYWLS), an all-girls public school network, and the CollegeBound Initiative (CBI), a co-ed college access initiative. Ann's aim was to give a high-quality college preparation education modeled after the best private institutions to children growing up in low-income neighborhoods. Ann teamed together with the New York City Board of Education to create The Young Women's Leadership School of East Harlem in 1996, the country's first public all-girls school in 30 years. More than 2,400 students are served by SLN's five high-performing Young Women's Leadership Schools in New York City. The success of =SLN has prompted the establishment of a slew of single-gender schools around the country, including 13 SLN affiliates in Illinois, Maryland, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, and Texas. CBI was founded shortly after SLN of East Harlem began to provide comprehensive college assistance programming. CBI currently serves over 18,000 low-income children in New York City's 36 high-need public schools. Ms. Rubenstein Tisch, a native of Kansas City, Missouri, began her 19-year career in broadcast journalism at WIBW-TV in Topeka, Kansas. She subsequently went to WCOO-TV in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and ultimately became a National Correspondent for NBC Network News. Ms. Rubenstein Tisch gained a keen interest in educational problems while working as a National Correspondent. She was motivated to start an all-girls inner-city public school to help underprivileged families after reporting dozens of education stories for the network and reading and researching data on single-sex education. Ms. Rubenstein Tisch realized her dream in 1996 when she founded The Young Women's Leadership School of East Harlem with the overwhelming approval of the New York City Board of Education. Ms. Rubenstein Tisch received her education at Washington University in St. Louis, where she earned a degree in Psychology and Sociology Summa Cum Laude. She is presently a member of the Board of Trustees of Washington University in St. Louis. She is also a trustee of the Center for Educational Innovation and a member of the Dean's Council at the New York University Tisch School of the Arts. She is now advising a number of school systems and parent organizations around the United States.
