Two of the first movies Huston appeared in, Sinful Davey (1969) and A Walk with Love and Death (1969), were directed by her father. She also starred in The Dead (1987). She appeared in few films in the 1970s, choosing modeling instead.

Huston won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for Prizzi's Honor (1985). She was nominated for Academy Award for Best Actress for The Grifters (1990) and for Best Supporting Actress for her work in Enemies, a Love Story (1989).

Huston directed Bastard Out of Carolina and the TV movie Riding the Bus with My Sister.
