Anita Allen Biography

Anita L. Allen is the Henry R. Silverman Professor of Law and Professor of Philosophy at the University of Pennsylvania Law School. She received her Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Michigan and her J.D. from Harvard. Allen is a Senior Fellow in Bioethics at Penn’s Medical School, and a member of the American Law Institute. She is a fellow of the Hastings Center. Allen serves on a number of nonprofit Boards including The Electronic Privacy Information Center, The West Philadelphia Alliance for Children, and the Maternity Care Coalition.


Allen has written widely on privacy, ethics, race and gender. She is author of a textbook, "Privacy Law and Society" (West 2007), along with "The New Ethics: A Guided Tour of the 21st Century Moral Landscape" (2004) "Why Privacy Isn’t Everything: Feminist Reflections on Personal Accountability" (2003) and "Uneasy Access: Privacy for Women in a Free Society" (1988) Allen’s latest book, " Unpopular Privacy", will be published in 2010.


Allen has been a visiting Professor at Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and Waseda University (Tokyo). She was previously Associate Dean and Professor at Georgetown University Law Center. Allen is an occasional blogger at dailybeast.com, and contributes to newspapers and magazines. She has appeared on numerous major radio programs and network and cable television.
