Anish Kapoor Biography

Sir Anish Kapoor is a sculptor from the United Kingdom. Kapoor, who was born in Bombay, has lived and worked in London since the early 1970s when he went to study art at Hornsey College of Art and then the Chelsea School of Art and Design. In 1990, he was given the Premio Duemila Prize for representing Britain at the XLIV Venice Biennale. He was awarded the Turner Prize in 1991 and the Unilever Commission for the Turbine Hall at Tate Modern in 2002. Cloud Gate (also known as the Bean) in Chicago's Millennium Park; Sky Mirror, which was exhibited at the Rockefeller Center in New York City in 2006 and Kensington Gardens in London in 2010; Temenos in Middlehaven, Middlesbrough; Leviathan at the Grand Palais in Paris in 2011; and ArcelorMittal Orbit, which was commissioned as a permanent artwork for London's Olympic Park a year later. In the 2013 Birthday Honours, Kapoor was knighted for his contributions to the visual arts. In 2014, he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Oxford. In 2012, the Indian government bestowed upon him the Padma Bhushan, India's third-highest civilian honor. In 2015, a photograph of Kapoor was included in the section on British cultural icons on the newly designed British passport. He was named a recipient of the LennonOno Grant for Peace in 2016. Kapoor, who identifies as Jewish, was named the recipient of the USD$1 million Genesis Prize in February 2017, which honors individuals who have achieved excellence and international renown in their fields and whose actions and achievements demonstrate a commitment to Jewish values, the Jewish community, and the State of Israel.
