Andy Ozment Biography

Andy Ozment has worked in the government, academia, and the business sector in the areas of technology risk and cybersecurity. He's worked as a mechanic, a technologist, a policymaker, and an executive. Andy presently works for Capital One as the Chief Technology Risk Officer. He formerly worked at Goldman Sachs as a partner and Chief Information Security Officer (CISO). He was also the Assistant Secretary for Cybersecurity at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Obama White House's deputy cyber czar. Andy studied the economics of computer security and security usability at MIT Lincoln Laboratory before entering the government. He received a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Cambridge and a master's in international relations from the London School of Economics while on a Marshall Scholarship. Andy graduated from Georgia Tech with a bachelor's degree in computer science. Dr. Andy Ozment served as the Department of Homeland Security's Assistant Secretary for Cybersecurity and Communications (CS&C) (DHS). Andy was in charge of over 600 government workers and a $900 million budget to improve the security, resilience, and dependability of the United States' industry and vital infrastructure in this capacity. CS&C aims to secure civilian government networks in the federal ".gov" domain and to engage with the private sector (the ".com" domain) to improve private business security. The National Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Center (NCCIC), which is a 24/7 incident response and management center for cyberspace and communications in the United States, is part of CS&C. Andy has worked in cybersecurity as a programmer, operator, researcher, policymaker, and executive in the past. He was formerly the President's Senior Director for Cybersecurity and one of two deputies to the Cybersecurity Coordinator at the White House. He oversaw a group of people responsible for developing national policy and coordinating federal cybersecurity activities in the areas of critical infrastructure protection, legislation, executive branch security, privacy and civil liberties, information sharing, and incident response. Andy oversaw the creation and execution of President Barack Obama's Executive Order 13636 on Improving Critical Infrastructure Cybersecurity, which resulted in the internationally lauded NIST Cybersecurity Framework. Andy was also the driving force behind the creation of the National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace (NSTIC). Andy has worked with the Department of Defense, the National Security Agency, MIT Lincoln Laboratory, Merrill Lynch, and Nortel Networks. He holds a Ph.D. in computer science from Cambridge University, an MS in international relations from London School of Economics, and a bachelors in computer science from Georgia Tech.
