After nine years as an assistant, five of them as associate head coach, Newman spent ten seasons at Cal State-Fullerton, serving as the team's temporary head coach. In eight of his ten seasons with the Titans, he helped them top the Big West Conference in scoring, including a conference-best 81.8 points per game in 2008 when they won the Big West league and tournament and received an automatic invitation to the NCAA Tournament.
