Andrew Steer Biography

Dr. Andrew Steer is the President and CEO of the World Resources Institute, a non-profit organization devoted to supporting economic growth while also safeguarding the environment. More than 950 experts from WRI's offices in Brazil, China, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Mexico, the Netherlands, Turkey, the United States, and the United Kingdom work in more than 80 countries. Food, forests, water, energy, urbanization, climate change, and the ocean are the seven critical global problems that WRI works on. Dr. Steer came to WRI after serving as Special Envoy for Climate Change at the World Bank from 2010 to 2012. He was Director-General of the UK Department of International Development (DFID) in London from 2007 to 2010. He spent ten years in East Asia as the World Bank's Head of Mission in Vietnam and Indonesia. Dr. Steer formerly worked at the World Bank as Director of Environment and Social Policy, Chief of the Bank's Country Risk Division, and Chief Author of the 1992 World Development Report on Environment and Development, as well as teaching economics at Cambridge University. He has written extensively on economic and environmental interrelationships. Dr. Steer is a member of the World Economic Forum's Global Agenda Advisory Group, as well as the Global Commission on Adaptation and the Energy Transitions Commission. He is also a member of the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development (CCICED) and the Bank of America and IKEA Advisory Groups. Dr. Steer attended St Andrews University, the University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Cambridge. He holds a Ph.D. in international finance and economics.
