Ana Diez-Roux Biography

Ana V. Diez Roux, MD, PHD, MPH, is the Dornsife School of Public Health's Dean and Distinguished University Professor of Epidemiology, as well as the Director of the Drexel Urban Health Collaborative. She began her career as a physician in her hometown of Buenos Aires before pursuing public health studies at the Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health. She formerly worked at Columbia University and the University of Michigan, where she was Chair of the Department of Epidemiology and Director of the Center for Social Epidemiology and Population Health. Dr. Diez Roux is well-known globally for her work on the socioeconomic determinants of population health and the study of how communities impact health. Her research on the impacts of neighborhood health on population health and its factors has had a significant impact on policy debates over population health and its determinants. Social epidemiology and health disparities, environmental health effects, urban health, psychosocial factors, cardiovascular disease epidemiology, social environment-gene interactions, and the use of multilevel methods and complex systems approaches in population health are among her research interests. She has directed significant NIH and foundation-funded research and training programs in the United States and in partnership with several Latin American universities, and she is now the Principal Investigator of the Wellcome Trust-funded SALURBAL (Salud Urbana en América Latina) study. Dr. Diez Roux has served on numerous editorial boards, review panels, and advisory committees, most recently the Environmental Protection Agency's Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee (CASAC) (as Chair), the National Center for Health Statistics' Board of Scientific Counselors (BSC), and the International Advisory Committee on Health and Wellbeing in the Changing Urban Environment. She has won the Wade Hampton Frost Award from the American Public Health Association for her contributions to public health, as well as the American College of Epidemiology's Award for Outstanding Contributions to Epidemiology. She is a member of the American Epidemiological Society as well as the Academy of Behavioral Medicine Research. In 2009, she was elected to the National Academy of Medicine and the National Academy of Sciences. Dr. Diez Roux has mentored doctorate students, postdoctoral fellows, and younger faculty from a variety of backgrounds.
