Alon Halevy Biography

Dr. Halevy is a director of Facebook AI, based in Menlo Park, California. Dr. Halevy was the CEO of Megagon Labs, an AI research lab that focused on technologies for well-being, conversational interfaces, and the confluence of NLP and data management in general, from 2015 until 2018. Alon led Google Research's Structured Data Group from 2005 until 2015. He was previously a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Washington, where he created the Database Research Group. He worked as a Principal Member of Technical Staff at AT&T Bell Laboratories from 1993 until 1997. (later AT&T Laboratories). In 1993, he got his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Stanford University, and in 1988, he received his Bachelor's degree in Computer Science and Mathematics from Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Dr. Halevy's research interests include data integration, structured-data on the Web, semantic heterogeneity, personal information management, XML data management, web-site management, peer-data management systems, query optimization, database theory, knowledge representation, and the intersection of Database and AI technologies more broadly. Several systems were built as a result of his research, including the Information Manifold data integration system, the Strudel web-site management system, the LSD schema matching system, and the Tukwila XML data integration system. He was also a co-creator of XML-QL, which helped to shape the XQuery standard for querying XML data. His Google team created Google Fusion Tables, a collaborative solution for cloud data administration and visualization. Dr. Halevy co-founded Nimble Technology in 1999, which was one of the earliest businesses in the Enterprise Information Integration area (acquired by Actuate in 2003). Dr. Halevy launched Transformic Inc. in 2004, a business that developed search engines for the deep web, or material stored in databases behind online forms (acquired by Google in 2005). Dr. Halevy is a member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) (ACM). He was a Sloan Fellow from 1999 to 2000, and in 2000 he won the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE). He earned the VLDB 2006 Test of Time Award for his work on the Information Manifold System, and the VLDB 2018 Test of Time Award for his paper on WebTables. The ICDE 2013 Test-of-Time Award was given to a paper he co-authored on the Piazza Peer-to-Peer Data Management System. He served on the VLDB Endowment's Board of Trustees, the VLDB Journal's editorial board, as an associate editor and adviser for the Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research, and the ACM Transactions on Internet Technology's editorial board. He was the conference program chair for the ACM SIGMOD 2003 Conference. He has delivered over 50 keynote addresses at major conferences, as well as Distinguished Lectures at numerous computer science departments.
