Allison Compton Biography

Allison Compton is a motivational speaker and Paralympic medalist. She's turned a disability into a platform to share her story and inspire others to believe that anything is possible if you work hard and believe in yourself. Compton was born with a femur that was underdeveloped, resulting in a right leg that was half the size of her left. Her parents, who were distraught, had to choose between having her leg amputated from the hip down or having physicians conduct a difficult operation that would allow Compton to have more use and control of her limb. They realized they couldn't amputate Compton's foot after seeing her use it to support herself as a newborn. Medically, the surgery was a success. One of Compton's coaches informed her about a standing volleyball team for handicapped players when she was in high school. She discovered that the sport was exclusively available to guys at the time. She earned her place among the guys by demonstrating her talent and strength and demonstrating her worth as a member of their team. The squad competed on a national and international level. While Compton was permitted to participate in the United States, she faced opposition from the rest of the world. Her team jumped through hoops leading up to the 2000 Summer Paralympics to have Compton recognized as a member of the USA Paralympic Standing Volleyball squad. They discovered out she wouldn't be able to complete two days before the Paralympics in Sydney. After four years of hard training, she and others in her corner were able to compete in the inaugural Paralympic Games for Women's Sitting Volleyball. Not just that, but she also guided her side to a Bronze Medal match in Athens the following year. They were awarded their medal when Compton scored the game's last point. Compton resigned in 2004 after a successful Paralympic career and dedicated her time to furthering her career, having a family, and promoting awareness for individuals with disabilities. She now tours the country telling her experience and offering advice to parents with disabled children.
