About Allen Klein
Allen Klein Biography
Have you ever heard of a "Jollytologist"? Well, meet the world's only Allen Klein. Klein teaches people all around the globe how to deal with everything from traffic jams to catastrophes through his books and seminars. Klein became interested in this odd area of work after his wife died at the age of 34 from a rare liver illness. He observed how her sense of humour helped her and people around her survive. He also witnessed how comedy helped him cope with his loss. He now teaches others how to find some when things are tough. These audiences include citizens from all 48 states, as well as Israel and Australia, as well as clients ranging from IBM to the IRS. Klein is the immediate past-president of The Association for Applied and Therapeutic Comedy, a roughly 600-member international organization whose mission is to promote the study and application of humor and laughter for beneficial outcomes. Klein is also an award-winning speaker and best-selling book, as well as the recipient of a Toastmasters Communication and Leadership Award and the National Speakers Association's Certified Speaking Professional credential. (This distinction is held by less than 800 of the organization's 4,000 members.) He was also inducted into New York City's Hunter College Hall of Fame in 2007. Only a few dozen persons are chosen for this honor from among thousands of previous graduates. The Healing Power of Humor, Klein's debut book, is currently in its 31st printing and eighth foreign language translation. It teaches readers how to deal with ordinary hardships and tribulations via the use of humor. His second book, The Courage to Laugh: Comedy, Hope, and Healing in the Face of Death and Dying, explores how individuals have used humor to overcome tragedy. In addition to Quotations to Cheer You Up, Up Words for Down Days, The Change-Your-Life Quote Book, WorkLaughs, ParentLaughs, and TeacherLaughs, he has written thirteen additional publications. In addition, his work has appeared in four Chicken Soup for the Soul volumes. Klein holds a master's degree in comedy (from St. Mary's College in Minnesota—no joke!) And he's a good fit for his subject. Klein was dubbed the "King of Whimsy" years before becoming a "Jollytologist" since he created all of the children's shows for CBS television in New York City. Among such creations was the Captain Kangaroo program, which you may recall. Klein, while no longer working in the lighthearted world of children, feels that adults should take a lesson from them and lighten up. Klein is the editor of The Mid-Month Mirth Memo e-zine and the originator of International Mirth Month to assist adults in doing so (every March). Klein, according to comedian Jerry Lewis, is a "noble and vital force looking over the human predicament." PROGRAMS The Positive Aspects of Change This presentation will show how having a sense of humor may help you deal with changes and problems in the job and in life. Participants will discover tools, ideas, and tactics for utilizing humor to relieve stress and deal with not-so-funny situations through laughing (yuk, yuk), lecturing (yak, yak), and playful exercises (oohoo!). The Power of Humor to Heal The therapeutic advantages of comedy are demonstrated and documented in this lecture. Participants will discover skills and strategies to improve their lives via laughing, lectures, and playful activities, as well as why humor can provide a new perspective and how to laugh at not-so-funny circumstances. Workplace Humor: Laughter Can Make You More Productive It has been estimated that 80 percent of sickness is caused by stress. This inspiring and educational session provides participants with a pocket full of FUN-raising work-related skills to help them be more productive while laughing away those negative stress circumstances through humor, lecturing, and amusing activities. Humor in Hospice Work: The Courage to Laugh This show verifies what George Bernard Shaw once said: "Life does not stop to be amusing when people die, any more than it ceases to be serious when people laugh." It is filled with uplifting, and often humorous, anecdotes from folks who have had the strength to laugh despite their diagnosis.
