Alexander Betts Biography

Alexander Betts is a British academic and the Pro-Vice-Chancellor for External Engagement, Sport, and Community at the University of Oxford. He is the Leopold Muller Professor of Forced Migration and International Affairs, William Golding Senior Fellow in Politics at Brasenose College, and Associate Head of Oxford’s Social Sciences Division. His research focuses on the political economy of refugee protection, migration governance, and humanitarianism, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa. He has authored 12 books, including “The Wealth of Refugees: How Displaced People Can Build Economies” (2021), which won the International Studies Association’s Distinguished Book Award, and “Refuge: Transforming a Broken Refugee System” (2017, with Paul Collier), named among The Economist’s best books of 2017. Betts leads the IKEA Foundation-funded Refugee Economies Programme, studying the economic lives of refugees in Uganda, Kenya, and Ethiopia. He has published over 100 scholarly works, worked with UNHCR, and advised organizations like the World Bank and IOM. Recognized as a Fellow of the British Academy, a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader, and a Foreign Policy Top 100 Global Thinker, his TED talks have over 3 million views.
