Aletha Maybank Biography

Dr. Maybank is a highly skilled physician who has a track record of achievement and leadership in the fields of public health, health equality, and preventive medicine. In April 2019, Dr. Maybank became the American Medical Association's (AMA) first Chief Health Equity Officer and Vice President. Dr. Maybank became an Associate Commissioner, then a Deputy Commissioner, in 2014, and established the Center for Health Equity. The Race to Justice Initiative was created under her leadership to reform the Health Department's culture and public health practice, as well as to incorporate health equality in all of the department's activities. Other City agencies have recognized and adopted this work, and it has even caught the attention of the World Health Organization. Violent crime reduction, adolescent pregnancy prevention, birth equality, and faith-based initiatives all benefited from better cooperation under her watch. She was formerly an Assistant Commissioner in the Brooklyn District Public Health Office of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, where she used a place-based strategy. As one example, her Bureau developed a framework for community-driven planning and execution to improve the built environment by installing safety features and bike lanes to encourage active transportation. She has worked as an honest mediator and organizer of normally siloed big NYC agencies and small community boards through this work to enable fair planning dialogues. From 2006 until 2009, Dr. Maybank served as the founding director of the Office of Minority Health in the Suffolk County Department of Health Services in New York. She has lectured medical and public health students on health disparities, public health leadership and management, physician advocacy, and health community organizing. We Are Doc McStuffins, a campaign started by African American female physicians who were inspired by the Disney Junior character Doc McStuffins, was formed in 2012. Dr. Maybank is in high demand in the media and on the lecture circuit. Her appearances or profiles on Disney Jr.'s extremely successful Doc McStuffins Animated Series are a highlight. She's also consulted on two film projects: Byron Hurt's Soul Food Junkies and Crystal Emery's Black Women in Medicine. She has earned several accolades throughout the years for her achievements.
